Missions Opportunities
Great Crossing Baptist Church was founded on the principle of missions and we believe that we are a mission minded church through and through. Our deep desire is to fulfill the mission our Lord gave us in His Great Commission. There are two major arenas of mission that we emphasize as a church: “local missions” and “cooperative missions”.
Local Missions
The arena of local missions focuses our church on the activity of our members as we reach out to our community and as we send our members out to do the work of missions in our community and in other communities. We believe that every Christian who is a member of our local church has a calling on their lives to become involved in missions in their local setting. We teach and encourage each and every member to be involved in our local missions arena.
Some of the Local Missions Projects that we are undertaking are:
-
Benevolence Mission for persons who have emergency financial needs. Our church joins other churches and organizations in our area to help in these situations. Typical needs include things like utility bills, rent, house payments, and groceries. Our deacons and pastor administer this program and all are encouraged to give for its funding.
-
No Sale Garage Sale which provides clothing and other items to anyone in the community in need. Great Crossing has a mission’s storage building in which clothing and items are stored between these No Sales. We invite our church members to bring in good clothing or items they want to donate and we set a No Sale two or three times a year. People in the community are invited to come and shop for clothes and furniture and other items they need and are free to take them without cost.
-
Thanksgiving Baskets prepared for needy families for a Thanksgiving Meal. These families sometimes call the church but often our members discover the need and turn in the name.
-
White Christmas Project serves families throughout the community. Our church coordinates this ministry with other agencies to make sure all people in the community have a chance to enjoy a Christmas with age appropriate gifts and food.
Cooperative Missions
The arena of cooperative missions includes all of the mission opportunities we are provided through our cooperation with our Association, The Elkhorn Baptist Association; our state convention, The Kentucky Baptist Convention; and through our national convention, The Southern Baptist Convention.
Some examples of the Missions we are privileged to become involved in through this cooperative arena are:
-
Feed the Hungry - Our JOY (Just Over Youth) Group Goes to Irishtown in Lexington once a month to help in the Elkhorn Association sponsored Feed the Hungry Program.
-
Toys for Christmas - Our Church supports the Toy Stores set up by the Elkhorn Association each year prior to Christmas through giving toys as well as working in the stores. The stores are offered in numerous locations in the Lexington area, one of which is Georgetown. Our church members volunteer to help in the Georgetown store and others when needed.
-
The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions and the
-
Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions are the two big Missions Offerings in which Great Crossing participates.
-
The Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention is also supported with a percentage of all undesignated offerings given into the general fund.
